It is common for everyone to have a family dentist; which is also known as a general dentist, especially for routine check-ups and oral exams. At each meeting the basics should be done and discussed, this includes the basic for a healthy mouth such as proper cleaning and what not. Below are the top five tips that every dentist should tell their patients on how to help get a healthier and better smile.

Tip One:

You can seal your teeth which protects them. – This is a process that is pain free and commonly done in children to protect their teeth that are more vulnerable than other ones. Overall, it is a thin coating of a protective plastic that gets applied to the back of the teeth and it helps prevent them from decaying. The sealant fills in areas which stops food particles from becoming trapped.

Tip Two:

Don't eat a lot of sweets. – Sweets are yummy, but the sugar breaks down and creates an acid that then wears down the enamel on your teeth. Try to avoid sugar as much as possible; think water with lemon instead of soda and fresh fruit instead of cake. Indulge when you want, but think twice and then always brush or rinse afterwards.

Tip Three:

After every time you eat rinse and chew. – It is ideal to brush your teeth after every time you eat, but this is not something that can be done; instead, rinse your mouth out with mouth wash and/or chew a piece of gum. It will increase the saliva flow which will just wash away more of the bacteria that there may be. It will also help with neutralizing the acids that are harmful.

Tip Four:

Fluoride is really helpful. – Fluoride can be applied to the teeth by a dentist, but it is a common ingredient in mouthwash and toothpaste; this is because fluoride protects the teeth from disease and decay by helping to strengthen the enamel on the teeth.

Tip Five:

Brush your teeth without really brushing. – There are foods out there that clean your teeth while you chew them such as fresh fruits and vegetables that are crispy and crunchy. It is best to always have one of these foods at every meal. Finish eating the meal with foods like carrots, apples or celery to properly brush without really brushing. Your mouth will be clean and feel completely refreshed.
